Pioneer is a brand that has been on my radar for a long time. Compared to other brands on the market Pioneer is innovative like no one else developing affordable wallets for the masses that break the stereotype of ‘using leather’ to create wallets that use some of the most unique materials on the market. Pioneer first came onto the scene back in 2018 where they developed their first wallet, the Pioneer Flyfold, and listed it on Kickstarter to great success. Having raised over $250,000 they now had funds to develop the full range and brand that would become the amazing Pioneer Wallets.

TL;DR: Some of the best use of quality and innovative materials I’ve come across. Attractive design and build to last. Great for those who love the outdoors.

Pioneer Ion Wallet Review

How Unique is the Wallet?

The Pioneer Ion is a unique wallet in terms of its materials but when it comes to its actual design it’s very similar to any bi-fold you can find on the market and doesn’t offer any unique storage features other than cash or card storage. That being said, the materials used provide some amazing benefits that you won’t find in any other wallets on the market and its durability is second to none. I have no fears this wallet could last a lifetime with proper care. The unique look and feel of the wallet thanks to its color range and distinct patternation are also enough for some to consider this wallet.

What are the Wallets Features?

The Pioneer Ion is designed like any traditional bifold. The outside of the wallet doesn’t provide any features and is made with minimalism in mind. Once opened, the wallet has 2 distinct slows that can hold a maximum of 8 cards and folded bills. I’d be lying if I didn’t say cash and cards can get a little cramped in there and the more your store the harder it gets to access your stuff. That being said this is a tiny wallet, for minimalist lovers, coming in at 103 mm x 150 mm x 2 mm (open) so this is to be expected.

What’s the Wallet Made From?

The materials used in the making of the Pioneer Ion are really unique, to say the least. In fact, the biggest selling point of the Pioneer wallet range is their use of strange materials that most probably won’t have heard of. These include the materials 10XD, a material 10 times stronger than steel, 3PN, that provides a wonderful matte finish to each wallet, and Softshell, a water repellent material that is lightweight, durable, and machine washable. Having used the Pioneer Ion for some time now I can confidently say the materials are too quality and have many advantageous qualities compared to the likes of leather or metal.

What I love about the Pioneer range of wallets are the distinct color options they’re always available in. It really sets the brand apart from others and with a matte range (from grey to green) and crosshatched patternation really provides an attractive and premium look at an affordable price.

Is it a good price?

At a price tag of $55.00, I have no problem recommending the Pioneer Ion wallet. Its uniqueness is far more valuable than most standard copycat wallets out there and really is a joy to use in person. At $55.00 this wallet is an absolute steal.

What are the alternatives?

Being such a unique wallet I found it very difficult to find many alternatives that compare to the Pioneer Ion Wallet. That being said I was able to find a few alternative brands, that also use highly unusual material in their designs, that might be worth looking at if you’re looking for something water-resistant and durable. You can find these alternative picks below.

The Scrubba Weightless Wallet

The Flipside Wallet

The Flowfold Vanguard Wallet

The Hawbuck Dyneema Wallet

Final Verdict

The Ion Wallet by Pioneer has been a joy to use. Although its functionality is simple, it’s the fantastic attractive look and amazing use of materials really makes it stand out from the crowd. Thanks to the material I think this wallet would be best for people who enjoy sports or the outdoors as the water-resistant properties and hardy material make it great for more extreme activities and living. Pioneer also offers a 10 year ‘unlimited’ warranty that covers damage and deflects that is one of the best warranties out there.
