Paper Wallet's First MagSafe Wallet Is Made From Tyvek

The brand's paper-thin signature material finally goes MagSafe, even if the stuff still isn't for me.

Wallets can be made from a vast array of different materials. One brand that has taken a more niche approach is the aptly named Paper Wallet, who are one of a few brands (Dynomighty included) that produce wallets from a paper-like material known as Tyvek.

The material, to me, is one that has its place, but one I'm personally not a fan of. That's my own opinion, of course, and Tyvek does have a lot going for it. For a start, there's its literal paper-thin thickness, which primes it for use in smaller, more minimalist wallets, meaning you can get all the functionality of a leather or bifold wallet at a significantly smaller size. The second big plus is the ability to print patterns and designs straight onto it, which makes it one of the most versatile materials out there. You only need to look at the sheer variety of designs on offer from the likes of Paper Wallet to see what I mean.

So Why Isn’t Tyvek for Me?

If you’re curious as to why I don’t like the material, it’s very simple. Although it’s far more durable than you’d expect, it really doesn’t age well, and it creases very easily, giving you less of an aged look (nothing like a leather patina) and more of what I can only describe as worn. The other reason, and keep in mind this one is very specific to me, is the feel of it. Tyvek has a very smooth, soft, slippery feel to the touch, and I simply hate handling the material. Entirely personal, I know, but there it is.

Paper Wallet Steps Into the Modern Age

So, with all that said, Paper Wallet are entering the modern age with their first MagSafe compatible wallet, made from that same Tyvek material. There are 8 designs available at present. The design itself isn’t overly unique in any real way, aside from the material and the artwork, as it follows the template of Apple’s own official MagSafe wallet: a single pocket on the back that can store up to 3 cards.

Paper Wallet describe the range as durable and lightweight, with a strong magnetic backing that attaches instantly to any MagSafe-compatible phone for a secure, low-profile fit without adding bulk. As ever with this brand, the material is the pitch. They make the wallets from Tyvek, which they describe as a durable, lightweight and waterproof synthetic constructed from high-density, recyclable polyethylene fibers. The artist collaborations, like the Frog Hotel design they’re leading with, are released in limited editions, so once a design is gone, it may not come back.
