Paperwallet was founded in 2007 by Elad Burko in New York after a friend showed him a paper wallet from Italy. After experimenting with materials Burko settled on Tyvek, a synthetic paper used in everything from clothing tags to building wrap, because it is water-resistant, tear-resistant, recyclable, and almost impossibly thin. The brand has raised over $600,000 across multiple Indiegogo campaigns and shipped more than 100,000 wallets, but its real distinction is the artist programme: Paperwallet partners with independent artists worldwide who design the prints, with every wallet sale supporting the artists directly. The wallets fold flat, weigh almost nothing, and survive being run through the washing machine.
