Johnny Slim Wallet Review
A compact take on a classic: the Johnny Slim delivers premium craftsmanship in a minimalist form.
Loyal Stricklin is one of my favourite leathercraft goods brands and I've been a big fan of theirs for a number of years now. The brand specialises in a wide range of handcrafted goods not just leather wallets, but also apparel including hats, belts, and even denim jackets, all made with the same care and attention to detail. I previously had the chance to use and review what is arguably their most well-known product, the original Johnny Wallet. Now, Loyal Stricklin has introduced a new addition to the family, a more compact version of their classic wallet, aptly named the Johnny Slim wallet. While it carries the same DNA and charm of the original, this version is pared down for those who prefer to carry a little less without sacrificing craftsmanship or style.
The Johnny Wallet is a cleverly designed piece that, at its core, seems aimed at delivering a high-quality leather wallet at a more accessible price point. As I’ve touched on in past reviews (notably the Wask Wallet by Willow Craft Goods), handmade wallets often come with a steep price tag – and for good reason.
Crafting a wallet by hand isn’t a quick process. If it takes a skilled leatherworker the better part of a day to make just one, then naturally the cost has to reflect that. Just look at Loyal Stricklin’s Field Backpack, which retails for over $1000, and you’ll understand the sort of labour and materials involved in their products.
So how does a brand like Loyal Stricklin navigate that challenge? The answer lies in smart, efficient design. The Johnny Slim Wallet is crafted in a way that cuts down on production time without compromising on quality.
It’s still made with premium leather and expert craftsmanship, but its construction is streamlined to reduce labour time – and that ultimately brings the price down. It’s a thoughtful approach that allows more people to experience top-tier handmade leather goods without the usual luxury price tag.

Design & Functionality
Loyal Stricklin only uses thick, high-quality hides (as covered earlier), and this plays a critical role in the wallet’s structure. The rigidity of the leather gives the wallet shape and form something that would be completely lost if a thinner, floppier leather were used. A design like this relies on that structure to stay functional. Without it, it would collapse in on itself.
Internally, the wallet is split into two compartments, which adds a useful bit of organisation. You can keep your most-used cards in one and less-used cards or folded cash in the other. It’s a simple layout, but it’s executed well, and simplicity is what makes it effective. You can comfortably store anywhere between 1 to 8 cards, along with a couple of bills if needed.

Now, let’s talk about the Johnny Slim’s only real drawback – its tightness. To keep the wallet as compact as possible, it’s been sized just slightly larger than a standard credit card. While this makes it ideal for front pocket carry, it also means that space inside is at a premium.
Cards fit snugly, almost too snugly, and accessing the one you want, especially when fully loaded, can be frustrating. I often had to wrestle with the stack or pull all the cards out just to get to the one I needed, which isn’t ideal when you’re trying to pay for something quickly.
That said, this issue does ease up with time. As the leather breaks in and softens, it becomes more forgiving and cards are easier to retrieve. Like any good leather product, there’s a break-in period – and once you’re through it, the wallet becomes much more user-friendly. It’s not a dealbreaker by any means, just something to be aware of if you’re expecting instant smooth operation out of the box.

A Great Choice in Leather
One of the great aspects of purchasing a wallet from a handcrafted leather goods brand such as Loyal Stricklin is you’re always guaranteed to get leather that is top notch, usually sourced from some of the best and most famed tanneries in the world. The Johnny Slim is no exception to this and in total you have 5 different leather’s to choose from including:
- Cognac Nemesis Leather From Badalassi Carlo in Italy.
- Italian Buttero Leather from Conceria Walpier.
- Natural “Waxy” Leather From Badalassi Carlo in Italy.
- Grey Camo Leather From La Perla Azzurra in Italy.
- Horween Shell Cordovan.
- American Alligator Leather.
Now I’m not going to go into the details of every leather type listed here, but I will make a few notable mentions. The first, and the cheapest when it comes to purchasing a wallet, is the Italian Buttero, and it’s the one I personally purchased. Buttero is a full-grain vegetable-tanned leather produced by Conceria Walpier in Tuscany.
It’s known for its rich colour, smooth surface, and slightly firm temper which softens beautifully over time. It’s a joy to handle and develops a stunning patina, making it a favourite among leather enthusiasts who appreciate character and evolution in their goods.

Then there’s Horween Shell Cordovan – a legendary leather with a reputation that precedes it. Made from the fibrous shell of a horsehide, this leather undergoes a lengthy and meticulous tanning process at the Horween tannery in Chicago. The result is a dense, glossy, and incredibly durable material that feels unlike anything else. Shell Cordovan is expensive, but for good reason – it’s rare, luxurious, and built to last a lifetime.
Lastly, American Alligator is also an option here, though it’s offered at a significant premium. It’s not a common choice in the wallet world due to its cost and exclusivity, but for those looking to own something truly distinctive and opulent, it’s a statement piece.
Its natural scale patterns and texture are impossible to replicate and make each wallet entirely one of a kind. No matter which you choose, Loyal Stricklin doesn’t cut corners – every option reflects quality, heritage, and craftsmanship.

Price & Final Verdict
The Johnny Slim is a solid evolution of the original Johnny Wallet – retaining its charm, craftsmanship, and distinctive design, but in a more compact, pocket-friendly size. It’s clear that Loyal Stricklin aimed to make their craftsmanship more accessible without cutting corners, and in that respect, they’ve succeeded.
Yes, the smaller size brings with it some limitations, especially when it comes to card access – but this is something that improves as the leather softens and moulds with use. It’s a wallet that asks for a bit of patience but rewards you with character and usability over time.
With prices ranging from $50.00 for the standard leathers to $350 for premium options like Shell Cordovan or American Alligator, the Johnny Slim caters to a wide spectrum of budgets. Whether you’re after a straightforward, reliable carry or something truly luxurious, there’s an option here worth considering.
In short, if you’re after a handcrafted minimalist wallet with personality, integrity, and genuine quality the Johnny Slim is well worth a look. For more details, check it out on Loyal Stricklin’s official website using the link below.
