Double Oak Essentials Wallet Review
Traditional asthetics meets modern functionality. But is the Double Oak Essentials bifold wallet worth the heafty price tag?
I must admit I've been a little late to the party with the sheer type of Double Oak essentials and their range of goods and wallets. I first stumbled upon them on reddit, being highly recommended by many people when discovering pop-up wallets. And by sheer chance earlier this month someone working for the brand contacted me directly on Instagram and asked if I was willing to take one for a spin. While it’s arrived, I've been using it for nearly 4 weeks now as my daily carry and I have some thoughts on the wallet. Let’s jump straight in.

About the Brand: Double Oak Essentials
Double Oak Essentials is a team of designers focused on building better everyday products, pieces that balance innovation, function, and timeless aesthetics. Established in the mid-2010s, the brand operates within the personal carry goods market, combining modern functionality with classic design sensibilities. Their range covers wallets, travel bags, and accessories, with top-grain leather and modular cardholder mechanisms at the core of most of their products.
On the sustainability side, Double Oak offsets their carbon footprint through a partnership with GreenSpark, contributing to the planting of over 3,000 trees each month. It is a brand that sits comfortably in the mid-range of the market, with enough thought behind the products to make them worth considering seriously.

Look & Design: Traditional asthetics done right
When I first unboxed the Double Oak Essentials bifold wallet there was no doubt in my mind I was in for something special. It is clear no expense has been spared, from the stellar unboxing experience, yes, even the packaging is impressive, through to the premium leather and metal pop-up mechanism inside.
At its core, the wallet is a pop-up cardholder wrapped in a leather bifold casing, combining the best of modern functionality with traditional aesthetics. The leather is immediately distinctive. It has a suede-like appearance with a unique texture where you can feel the grain beneath your fingers rather than a smooth, polished surface, and it carries an almost slightly waxy, tactile quality to it. It is not unpleasant at all and reminds me of the crazy horse leather that brands like Andar have used to great effect in the past. It also picks up marks and scuffs more readily than most leathers, which is worth knowing upfront.

This quality leather forms the basis for what is a genuinely impressive metal mechanism at the core of the wallet. I have not come across a pop-up wallet of this sheer quality in a long time. Everything from the external metal shell through to the button itself is premium. The button is located on the upper right-hand side of the wallet and activated by pushing down. It is a perfectly machined knob with an etched texture that gives it a satisfying grip and feel.
Internally, the pop-up mechanism itself is made entirely from metal, which is worth dwelling on. A lot of pop-up wallet brands, and I mean a lot, use plastic mechanisms, which raises questions about long-term durability and can contribute to card jamming and a less smooth ejection action over time. Double Oak Essentials has taken no shortcuts here, and it shows in how the mechanism feels in use. It is one of those details that is easy to overlook when buying a wallet online but immediately noticeable the moment you press that button for the first time.

Functionality & Utility
Functionally, the Double Oak Essentials wallet has a lot going for it and the design is clearly well thought out. In total the wallet can store up to 10 cards split across two distinct areas. Six cards sit in the metal pop-up mechanism, and a further Four spread across the three additional leather card slots, giving a combined total of 10 (you can probably squeeze a few more cards if you don’t carry cash). Having a dedicated external slot on the outside of the wallet is ideal for your most frequently used card, while I found the internal leather slots perfect for accessories like a card tracker and a multi-tool. It all just works. In terms of capacity, layout, and ease of access, this is a well-balanced wallet.
There are also a couple of features that are not immediately obvious at first glance. The most notable is the magnetic closure. A small circular magnet sits beneath the leather and keeps the bifold securely shut when closed, which is a neat and understated touch that adds to the overall feel of quality without drawing attention to itself.

The second is the card locking system built into the pop-up mechanism. Cheaper pop-up wallets can suffer from cards working their way loose and falling out of the top, which is one of the more common complaints in this category. Double Oak Essentials have addressed this with a clever locking system that keeps cards securely in place until you intentionally eject them, giving you genuine peace of mind without adding any friction to the ejection process itself.
It is these small details that I admire most about Double Oak Essentials. The things the brand did not have to include but chose to anyway, because they knew it would make for a better wallet and a better overall experience. It is a breath of fresh air in a market where too many brands do the bare minimum and dress it up with good photography.

Usability in Practice: My time using the Double Oak Wallet
What sets this wallet apart from many similar options on the market is the pop-up mechanism itself. It is incredibly smooth and responsive, and it is one of the most satisfying mechanisms I have used in this category in a long time.
Now for the elephant in the room. The Double Oak Essentials wallet is thick, and I mean seriously thick. Its width comes in at 24mm, which by today’s standards is substantial. For context, that is roughly the equivalent of two Ridge Wallets stacked on top of each other, or approximately 70% larger than most modern smartphones. What does that mean in practice? It can absolutely be felt in your pocket, and the hard shell metal construction means it is also very rigid, which adds to that feeling. It is not the most uncomfortable wallet I have ever carried, not by a long way, and I have owned similarly sized wallets that are far worse to live with. But if you are in the market for a pop-up wallet that is also genuinely slim, the Double Oak Essentials is probably not the one for you.
That said, there is a clever way to shed the bulk when you need to. The metal mechanism and leather exterior are fully separable, which significantly reduces the overall size and effectively turns this into what I would call a two-in-one wallet. Strip it down to just the cardholder and you have a much more pocketable carry. I found myself doing this more than I expected. Nipping out for lunch or a quick coffee became a habit of leaving the leather at home and just pocketing the mechanism. It is a genuinely versatile option and one of the more practical design decisions the brand has made.
Payment is a pleasure with the Double Oak Essentials wallet, and that is testament to its fantastic design. The pop-up mechanism is one of the smoothest I have used, with cards fanning out perfectly spaced for immediate access. I went through the laborious process of activating the mechanism over and over, at least 100 times, and the wallet did not show a single sign of jamming, uneven card spacing, or friction issues throughout. It really is a strong contender alongside Secrid for one of the best mechanisms I have used to date.
One slight caveat, and it is perhaps a double-edged sword, is that returning cards to the wallet is a little trickier than most comparable pop-up wallets. This comes down to the small metal hook that slides over the top of your cards to prevent them from falling out, which is the same feature that makes the wallet so secure. Rather than simply sliding cards straight down from above, you need to angle them in from the right-hand side, ease them past the hook, and push down. It is not as complicated as it sounds, and you get used to it quickly. But when you are in a rush at a checkout or trying to return cards without giving it your full attention, it can take a moment longer than you would like.
Final Verdict: Is the Double Oak Wallet Worth it?
I have had a thoroughly great time using the Double Oak Essentials bifold wallet. In terms of sheer quality, I would be hard-pressed to find a better pop-up wallet on the market, and that is saying something when the likes of Ekster and Secrid are in the mix. That quality in materials extends directly to the pop-up mechanism itself, which is both incredibly smooth and built to last.
But all of this comes at a cost, and as you have probably guessed, it is not a cheap one. This wallet retails at $109.95, which puts it significantly above the likes of Ekster and Secrid, both of which are already considered premium options in this space.
So is it worth the price? On quality alone, absolutely. I have recommended cheaper wallets for less and felt less confident doing so, which tells you everything you need to know about how good this wallet is. The one thing that I think would genuinely give most people pause, and the question I keep coming back to myself, is the size. That is the only real barrier between this wallet and an outright recommendation for everyone.
Overall though, this is a brilliant wallet and one I genuinely loved using. It is also worth noting that Double Oak Essentials are fairly generous with discounts throughout the year, so if a price tag of over $100 feels like a stretch right now, events like Black Friday can bring the price down by as much as 40%.
