Another slow start to the year with the sheer lack of variety on kickstarter and other crowdfunding projects. Kickstarters in general see a bit of a lag in winter (especially right after christmas) so it's no surprise that there isn’t much in the way of wallets so far this year. That being said, there isn’t nothing so here is my analysis on what you could back ono kickstarter this February.

Nomad Wallet

NOMAD Wallet

Not to be confused by another popular brand of wallets, the so called nomad wallet is a pretty typical looking leather wallet created by a family unit and inspired based on their many travels and globe trotting. 2 card slots for a max of up to 6 cards storage, and some pretty funky designs of the front, the nomad wallet is simple, well made and would probably make a good wallet all in all.

The campaign on kickstarter isn’t polished and honestly reminds me of those early 2010 kickstarter days when anyone and everyone could get funding without the ultra polished high marketing budget some campaigns get today. Anyhow I can’t say I’m partially inspired by the NOMAD Wallet, mainly due to its design being quite generic and there not being much besides its front design making it different from others on the market.

But I do like supporting family kickstarter projects, like the range of designs and being handmade from quality leather is a big plus. With funding already secured for this wallet, why not take a punt?

Jenoss Wallet Kickstarter

Jenoss Wallet

I wouldn’t lie that I’m getting kind of sick of pop-up wallets at this point. They have been done to death and aside from a few pieces of innovation over the years (like the slider mechanism developed by Groove Life), the pop-up wallet remains popular but i’d argue stagnant in terms of innovation. So when i see a wallet on kickstarter that’s basically just a pop-up wallet and offers no differences - i have to roll my eyes.

This obviously segways into the Jenos smart pop-up wallet as it’s called. The key difference here aside from the pop up aspect is the in-built smart tracking. A few years back a wallet with inbuilt tracking would have blown my mind, but since Apple opened up its network to developers, its become sort of a none-feature or at least one where you don’t need it in built. Tracking devices are a dime a dozen now and anyone can buy a slim tracker from some knock-off company for little these days.

Overall, I like the overall style and design of the Jenos and its clear some attention to detail was used when designing the wallet. That being said, to me, the wallet doesn’t do much or provide anything new or that isn’t already on the market with the dozen of other brands. That being said the Jenos has successfully been funded and can still be backed.

Ruben Wallet Kickstarter

RUBEN Wallet

The Ruben is by far the most innovative and interesting wallet to look at this month combining 3 tech features: tap-to-pay, Apple Find My tracking, and NFC digital sharing for contact details. The idea of all of these individually is not new but this might be the first time I’ve come across them all together in what seemingless looks like a neat little minimalist wallet.

Most “smart wallets” focus on tracking or ejecting cards, but integrating contactless payment directly into the wallet itself is less common. The digital sharing feature (presumably NFC-based contact sharing) follows a growing trend we’ve seen with products like the Rolling Square AirCard. For me, Contactless payments is the form in the UK so this is a cool idea if executed well.

With all that being said, there’s something to be said about a wallet that tries to do too much or fails to understand what people want. Personally, I was a little confused by what the Ruben wallet actually does and with the campaign sitting at just 4% out of a target of around $20K, I’m probably not the only one. Cool idea, with a lot that can go wrong.
