Victorinox Smart Card Wallet Review

For most people, Victorinox needs no introduction. The legendary Swiss company behind the original Swiss army knife has been innovating for well over a century, with its iconic red multitools now sold in over 120 countries worldwide. But as with any long-standing brand, staying relevant means evolving, and sometimes, going far beyond what you’re known for. Did you know Victorinox even sells its own range of fragrances? I didn’t, but now I’m genuinely curious what the so-called, I quote, “unique essence of Switzerland” smells like.

With that spirit of innovation in mind, Victorinox has released what I’d consider one of the most unusual wallets I’ve come across in years - the Victorinox Smart Card Wallet. It’s a product that sticks to the company’s core values, combining the utility of its classic Swiss army knife with the modern convenience of a pop-up card wallet.

Combining a pop-up wallet with the versatility of a Swiss army knife might sound like an impossible task, but Victorinox has managed to bring the two concepts together in a clever, if not slightly unexpected way. At first glance, it appears the multi-tools have been integrated directly into the pop-up mechanism itself, but that’s not the case. Instead, the wallet houses a separate card-shaped multi-tool that sits neatly on top of a standard pop-up mechanism, secured in place with a simple elastic strap. This is simular to the Swiss Card Lite, a credit card shaped multi-tool, that I reviewed back in 2022. For those unfamiliar, a pop-up or cascading card wallet is a style that stores cards inside a compact casing and releases them with a push-button mechanism. Cards are typically staggered on release, allowing for quick and easy access. Since Secrid popularised the concept back in the late 2000s, it’s become one of the most recognisable wallet formats of the modern era, spawning countless variations. Despite packing in a full suite of practical tools, the wallet itself remains surprisingly sleek. I initially assumed all these extra features would bulk it up or interfere with the mechanism, but that’s not the case at all. The Smart Card Wallet feels well-thought-out, with each component having a clear and intentional place which also fitting securely together.

ABS is a rigid, impact-resistant plastic that makes a lot of sense here, it’s durable and lightweight, ideal for everyday carry. Unlike the typical metal pop-up wallet, Victorinox has gone for a plastic construction, which is rare in this format. That said, the decision is a smart one. Since the multi-tool itself is metal, pairing it with a metal body could lead to unwanted scratches, added weight, or even jamming issues with the mechanism. Using plastic helps avoid these problems while keeping the whole thing feeling balanced and functional.

Functionality & Utility: Not your Normal Wallet

The main reasons to purchase this wallet is always going to be down to the included multi-tool that is unique to the Victorinox Smart Card Wallet. But let’s for a second remove these smart features from the equation and look factiuality of how the Victorinox wallet works as an actual wallet. The Victorinox is a simple pop-up wallet that also utlilsies and elasticated band that fits around the body of wallet. This has a dual fuction. the first, being a way to store any banknotes or addtional paper items, that can be founded and tucked underneth. The second, being a way to secure and hold the pop-up aspect of the wallet and the multi-tool.

As a wallet, the Victorinox Smart Card performs admirably. The pop-up mechanism is smooth, reliable, and offers quick, hassle-free access to your cards. While the internal components are lightweight, this contributes to its slim profile and comfortable carry, making it ideal for daily use. Having tested countless pop-up wallets over the years, I can confidently say this one holds its own—using a tried-and-tested mechanism that many brands rely on for its dependability. And while the multi-tool element might be the star of the show, the wallet component still delivers practical function, making this a unique and worthwhile addition to your everyday carry setup.

What does the Multi-Tool Card offer?

We have to talk about the features of the mulit-tool card offered by this smart wallet, afterall, if you’re even considering this wallet this is the only reasons to want this wallet. In total, the multi-tool has 10 features ranging from all the typcail stuff you’re expect from a Victorinox swiss army knife. This includes the following:

Tools	My thoughts
Blade	A small blade that is located corner of the multi card. The blade is less than 3inches and comes with a plastic handle, that is also what’s used to grip and pull it out. Mine arrived fairly blunt but sharped up very nicely.
Scissors	A classic pair of scissors that i think Victorinox do fantastically.
Nail file	Not much to say about this. Does the job nicely. Located at the bottom middle of the multi card. Has two different grits on each side.
Screwdriver 2.5 mm	Probably the most tool used in this set. It’s a little fiddily to use as with this tool you don’t get a handle for leverage like with a classic multi-tool. Just something to keep in mind.
Pin	My least used tool. Never really found a good use for this.
Tweezers	Another great little tool that i use frquently. Great quality, decent size.
Toothpick	Another tool i don’t quite have a use for. It’s made from plastic.
Pressurised ballpoint pen	My second most used tool. You never know when you need a pen and having one on me 24/7 is a dream.

Utility and Daily Use of the Victorinox

TOne of my biggest concerns going into this review centred around two things: durability and usability. Victorinox made its name by producing multi-tools that could last a lifetime, so I was curious to see if that same level of resilience translated to their wallet, especially given its hybrid nature.

The second concern was more practical: how well would this wallet function in day-to-day use? After all, the two main components, the cardholder and the multi-tool - are kept together by nothing more than an elastic strap. Wallets like this can quickly become annoying if cash gets wedged awkwardly, if components shift during use, or if the whole thing just feels unstable in your pocket.

Let’s tackle durability first. As mentioned earlier, Victorinox partnered with Secrid for the cardholder mechanism, which was a smart move. Secrid not only invented the pop-up card system but has also earned a solid reputation for engineering products using high-quality and sustainable materials. After a month of use, I encountered no durability issues aside from the usual light scuffs - nothing unexpected and nothing that affected performance.

As for usability, I was pleasantly surprised. The design cleverly wraps the multi-tool section around the cardholder, creating a flush, unified feel. It doesn’t wobble, shift, or get in the way. The elastic band is strong and well-made, holding everything firmly in place and dispelling any worries I had about it being fiddly or impractical. Daily use was smooth and intuitive accessing cards, cash, and tools was quick and easy, and everything remained secure throughout.

All in all, the Victorinox Smart Card Wallet exceeded my expectations in both key areas. It’s a cleverly engineered piece of kit that brings genuine function to your pocket without sacrificing ease of use.

Final Verdict: How Good is the Victorinox Smart Wallet?

Overall, I came away impressed with the Victorinox Smart Card Wallet after a month of daily use. The integrated tools were genuinely useful and surprisingly convenient to have on hand, adding a bit of fun and practicality to my everyday carry. If you’re the kind of person who often finds themselves reaching for a screwdriver, pen, or pair of tweezers, this wallet might just earn its place in your pocket.
