Hardgraft is a brand I have covered before, and one I have a genuine amount of respect for. They are a UK-based leather goods company that has been making things in Italy since 2007, and their approach to wallet design has always been characterised by a willingness to try something unusual. Their now-discontinued Ta-Da Wallet was an accordion-style carry that opened out to present all of its cards simultaneously. It was an ambitious idea that did not quite stick commercially, but that is beside the point. The fact that they built it says something about the brand's appetite for experimentation.

What the 2 Trick Pony Actually Is

The concept is a two-in-one wallet. The first component is a straightforward folding card wallet with two pockets for cards, cash, and business cards. Standard enough. The second component is a separate leather insert that sits alongside the main wallet and provides additional storage for coins, keys, small photos, or whatever else you want to keep close but separate.

The two pieces work together as a combined carry, but the insert can also be used independently. It is a modular approach to wallet design that is genuinely rare at this level of the market. The closest comparison that comes to mind is the Ekster Modular Wallet, which pairs a bifold with a detachable magnetic cardholder.

The principle is similar: one wallet with two functional modes. Hardgraft’s version skews more toward premium leather craft than precision engineering, which is consistent with everything else they produce.

The Materials and Build

Both components are made from full-grain vegetable-tanned vachetta leather with a stone-ground surface finish applied by hand. The edges are hand-brushed and oiled multiple times to achieve what Hardgraft describes as a soft, rounded, aged finish. There is minimal stitching and no lining, which keeps the wallet lean and allows the leather to be the primary material experience rather than a surface over something cheaper underneath.

Everything is made in Italy. Hardgraft has been working with Italian manufacturers for nearly two decades, and the level of craft in their products reflects that consistency. Vachetta leather in particular is known for developing a rich patina over time, so this is the kind of wallet that should look increasingly good the longer you carry it.

Price & Value for money: Quality comes to at cost

At $329, the 2 Trick Pony sits at the premium end of the wallet market. That is not unusual for Hardgraft, whose range broadly occupies this territory, and the materials and handwork justify it to a degree that many competitors at similar prices do not. But it is a significant outlay, and it is worth being clear about that upfront.

Whether the two-in-one concept adds enough functional value to justify that price over a single, simpler wallet is a question only you can answer depending on what you actually carry. If you currently split your essentials across multiple carries or regularly wish you had somewhere separate for coins and keys, the 2 Trick Pony has a genuine answer to that problem. If you carry three cards and nothing else, it probably does not.

It is available in Black Raw and Deep Brown. Both are the kind of colourways that will age naturally and look better for it. For more information the wallet check out Hardgraft’s official website using the link below.
