I have a strange fascination with the history of the wallet market. It might sound dull at first, but to me it’s anything but, mainly because almost no research exists on the subject. Unlike other apparel industries, such as wristwatches with their rich archives and well-documented evolution, the history of men’s wallets is practically unwritten. We have little to no record of the leading brands over the last century or of how wallets have intersected with fashion. With that in mind, today I’m taking a look at what is debatably the world’s first minimalist metal wallet, one that hit the market as far back as 1996.

The Storus Smart Money Clip is arguably the world’s first minimalist metal wallet – a slim, front-pocket wallet design combining a card holder and money clip. Long before today’s trend of sleek RFID-blocking metal wallets (epitomized by products like The Ridge Wallet), Storus pioneered this concept in the late 1990s. Its flagship product, the Smart Money Clip, introduced a radically different way to carry cash and cards: in a compact stainless-steel device that predated the minimalist wallet boom by over a decade.

The story of the Storus wallet is one of early innovation, widespread success, and a modern legal clash underscoring its legacy. If you needed any evideance that this wallet predates the metal wallets popular today, then the video below, showcasing an unboxing of the Storus Wallet, was filmed 16 years ago - 2008.

Origins of the Storus Smart Money Clip

Storus was founded in 1996 by entrepreneur Scott Kaminski, who set out to “redefine” the traditional wallet. Kaminski’s idea was to create an “alternative wallet” – something far slimmer and more efficient than bulky leather billfolds. His invention, the Smart Money Clip, launched that same year and was the first minimalist front-pocket wallet of its kind.

This device ingeniously combined a slot for credit cards on one side with a spring money clip on the other, all in a single piece of metal. Storus patented the design, establishing it as “the first patented, double-sided, stainless steel money clip [card holder]” on the market.

The Smart Money Clip struck a chord with consumers looking to downsize their everyday carry. By eliminating the excess pockets and folds of a normal wallet, it achieved an ultra-slim profile that could safely fit in a front pants or jacket pocket. Despite its diminutive size (about 2.9 × 2.25 inches, weighing only 1 ounce), the clip could securely hold up to 5 cards in its card slot and as many as 30 bills under the clip – more capacity than one might expect from a piece of metal barely a few millimeters thick.

Storus marketed the Smart Money Clip with the slogan “No more bulky wallet!” – emphasizing how it prevented the bulging back-pocket wallet problem and even reduced pickpocket risk by being carried in front. This novel idea of a front-pocket wallet was quite ahead of its time in the 1990s.

Pioneering the Minimalist Metal Wallet Category

Thanks to its unique utility, the Storus Smart Money Clip became a commercial hit and a trendsetter. It is often cited as the world’s best-selling money clip, with Storus moving millions of units worldwide over the years (although this claim is unverifed). The product’s success was fueled in part by wide distribution and clever marketing. Storus sold the Smart Money Clip through infomercials and home-shopping channels (it was featured on QVC for over a decade), introducing the minimalist wallet concept to a broad audience.

Many gift shoppers and travelers embraced the idea of a slim metal wallet that offered just the essentials. By the 2000s, the Smart Money Clip had spawned a number of copycats and inspired other “slim wallet” designs, but Storus’s product remained iconic in the category. In fact, the Smart Money Clip is credited with pioneering the entire “alternative wallet” category – essentially launching the minimalist wallet movement before that term was even in vogue. The Storus is in an exclusive club of pre 2010s innovative wallets along with the likes of the Secrid BodyCard and the ACM Wallet.

Storus didn’t stop with the original model. Over time, the company introduced variations and improvements to maintain its innovative edge. For example, it released a Smart Money Clip II (SMCII) in the early 2010s as an updated version of the wallet. The SMCII kept the same fundamental idea – a dual-sided card holder and clip – but refined the design for modern tastes. (Notably, Storus’s founder testified that the SMCII first went on sale in 2011, further solidifying Storus’s early presence in the space .) The Smart Money Clip line also expanded to different finishes (polished steel, titanium, gold-plated, matte colors, etc.) and even spawned spin-offs like a leather-wrapped version and a lighter “Money Clip Lite.” Through these developments, Storus maintained its reputation as the first company to reinvent the money clip into a true wallet alternative.

A Trend Ahead of Its Time

It’s important to appreciate just how far ahead of the trend Storus really was. In the late 90s and early 2000s, most people still carried traditional leather bifold or trifold wallets. The idea of a slim, minimalist wallet made of metal was novel and even a bit radical. Storus essentially had the minimalist metal wallet market to itself for many years, aside from a few niche competitors. The widespread popularity of minimalist wallets did not truly kick off until much later, around the 2010s, when everyday carry (EDC) gear and RFID-blocking cardholders became fashionable.

Only in the 2010s did a wave of new minimalist wallet brands emerge – often launched via crowdfunding campaigns – bringing renewed attention to the concept - I personally called this the Kickstarter wallet craze which you can read more on here. For instance, The Ridge Wallet was founded in 2013 and introduced via a successful Kickstarter campaign, riding the growing interest in sleek metal wallets and would go on to become one of the most popular wallets worldwide.

Ridge’s design (two aluminum or carbon fiber plates held together with elastic and screws, sandwiching cards in between) differed in construction from the one-piece Storus Money Clip, but the ethos was similar: a compact, front-pocket wallet that carries cards and cash with minimal bulk. Ridge’s Kickstarter and savvy online marketing propelled it into the mainstream, and soon many copycats and competing minimalist wallets flooded the market. By the late 2010s, the “slim wallet” had gone from an obscure idea to a staple item for style- and tech-conscious consumers.

What many new customers didn’t realize, however, was that Storus had already been doing this for nearly two decades. Long before “RFID-blocking” and “EDC slim wallet” were buzzwords, the Smart Money Clip had proven there was demand for a simpler way to carry essentials. In essence, Storus built the foundation that later brands built upon. Even the core selling points remained the same – front-pocket comfort, security, and a focus on just cards and cash. The difference was that by the 2010s, technology and fashion trends made these features even more desirable (for example, people carried more credit cards and fewer coins, making a compact card clip more practical). Storus recognized these needs early, which is why their 1996 product feels so familiar even today.

Legacy and Impact of the Storus Wallet

The Storus Smart Money Clip’s legacy is firmly cemented as a trailblazer in wallet design. Nearly 30 years after its debut, it’s clear that Storus introduced a concept that was well ahead of consumer trends. Every time someone swaps out a thick leather wallet for a svelte metal card holder, they are unknowingly following in Storus’s footsteps. The phrase “alternative wallet,” which Storus used in the 90s, has practically become mainstream ethos for today’s everyday carry enthusiasts.

The problem with this is Storus Wallet and brand will probably eventually be lost to time. Although they may have been the first to do something bold and different, they have never been a large player in the overall wallet market. It was the likes of Ridge Wallet, Ekster and Secrid who will most likely go down as the pioneers of a wave of new, creative and innovative wallets.

Storus Wallet Money Clip

Storus retains a loyal following and considerable respect from those in the know. The company still produces the Smart Money Clip (along with newer RFID-blocking Smart Wallet models that incorporate modern features), often highlighting its status as the original: “Storus was the first company to redefine and redesign traditional money clips and wallets”. But I guess, having that medal isn’t all there is, and I hope Storus can elevate its status going forward as it deserves the success.

In retrospect, the Smart Money Clip demonstrated that minimalism and durability could trump the storage capacity of a bloated wallet. It helped usher in a shift in how people think about carrying essentials: encouraging them to carry just what they need, in a form factor that’s sleek and modern. Today’s explosion of minimalist wallets – whether metal, carbon fiber, or slim leather – owes a debt to that humble stainless-steel clip from 1996.
