It takes a degree of confidence, or perhaps stupidity, to launch a crowdfunding campaign that essentially tells the world your previous product was not good enough. That is exactly what Mobile Pixels have done with the Shuffle Wallet 2.0, currently live on Kickstarter, which arrives with a pointed message: the original Shuffle Wallet had its problems, and this is the fix.

I wrote about thefirst Shuffle Wallet first last year in my article talking about a new type of ‘fan’ wallet and was impressed by its ambition to reinvent and innovate where others lack. But clearly, whether or not backers of its original campaign liked it, Mobile Pixels, the brand behind the wallet, has gone back to the drawing board, gathered user feedback, and rebuilding the wallet from the ground up. Credit where credit’s due. It takes guts to admit things didn’t pan out, and to essentially bash your own product, which is exactly what the brand does in its surprisingly funny campaign video.

Also its worth noting, The original Shuffle Wallet, which ran its own successful Kickstarter campaign, can currently be found at 70% off. a markdown that says more than any press release could about the team’s belief in where they are headed next.

What the Shuffle 2.0 brings to the table

The shuffle wallet 2.0 has spared no expensive in bringing some pretty hyped and modern features to its wallet with solid specs. The forged carbon version weighs 68 grams, which Mobile Pixels says is three times lighter than the original Shuffle. An aluminium version comes in at 87 grams. Both are genuinely lightweight for a smart wallet with electronics inside.

Built-in tracking is included without requiring a separate tag attachment, a real advantage over wallets that bolt on a bulky third-party tracker as an afterthought. It charges via USB-C and apparently only needs doing twice a year. MagSafe compatibility is built in, along with a quick-draw slot on the side for a single card you want instantly accessible without deploying the fan at all.

There is also a modular accessory system: an optional add-on brings an ID holder, extra card slot, and a money band for those who want a more complete carry. It is a sensible way to keep the base wallet slim without forcing everyone to carry more than they need.

RFID blocking is listed as a feature too. It is, in practice, a non-issue, contactless card fraud via RFID skimming is extraordinarily rare and largely a myth that the wallet industry has done very well out of. It is included here because it is expected, not because you need it.

The Fanning Mechanism: Cool in Theory

So what about card storage and access? One of the headline features of the wallet is it’s fanning mechanism that spreads up to seven cards outward with a single push, fanning them left to right so every card is visible at once. This is different from tradtional pop-up wallets, that fan cards outwards an apprtoach found in some of teh largest walelt rbands in the world like Secrid and Ekster.

It looks sharp. The campaign video is well-produced and gets the concept across clearly, genuinely one of the better Kickstarter videos I have seen in this category, and worth watching. The mechanism is visually striking and will absolutely get attention when you pull it out.

Here is my honest reservation though: I have been using pop-up wallets for years, and I have never found the existing mechanism to be a problem. Cards do not fall out of my Secrid. I do not struggle to identify which card I need. The access is already quick. Mobile Pixels may be solving a problem that, for a lot of existing pop-up wallet users, simply does not exist.

That is not a reason to dismiss it. It is just a reason to wait before calling it a revolution or a gamer changer. I will reserve full judgement until I have the wallet in my hands and have actually tested the fan in daily use. A mechanism that looks smooth in a controlled video shoot can feel very different after six months in a jeans pocket.

Early Verdict: Will I purchase the Shuffle Wallet 2.0?

The Shuffle Wallet 2.0 is a well-designed product from a brand that has shown real willingness to take criticism and act on it. It’s size & weight is excellent, the built-in tracking is a genuine differentiator, and the overall aesthetic is clean without trying to do too much. It does not look out of place alongside the established names in this space.

The fanning mechanism is the big question mark. It is interesting, it looks good, and it will turn heads. Whether it actually improves the daily carry experience over a Secrid or an Ekster is something I cannot tell you yet. That being said, as long as its not worse than a normal pop-up wallet this wallet has every potential to be a belter.

The campaign has already smashed its funding goal, so there is clearly appetite for it. If you want to back it yourself, the full details can be found using the link below. And yes, I have backed the Shuffle Wallet 2.0. Watch this space for our unboxing and full reviews coming soon.
