The Sony Playstation Wallet Review

Sometimes it’s nice to take a little break and try out a wallet that’s more fun than functional. The Playstation wallet is exactly this. An officially licensed product. Sony released this wallet back in 2014 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the console’s release. As someone nostalgic for both the PS1 & PS2, I couldn’t help but buy this wallet to really dig deep and see if it had any value as an actual wallet.

The Sony Playstation console was first released in 1994 and became the best-selling video game console of all time which led to the release of further models. It became the first console to ship over 100 million units worldwide making it an iconic and well-known product to not only hardcore gaming fans but also to the more casual player’

Look & Design

As you’d imagine, the whole selling point of this wallet is to look like the original PS1 console. Objectively speaking I think they’ve done a fantastic job while creating a wallet that is slim and functional while retaining the charm and look of the original console by Sony. The Sony PlayStation wallet is a standard-sized wallet made from 70% PU and 30% Polyester. Conceived to celebrate the original PlayStation’s 20th anniversary the PlayStation

Although this wallet was made as a joke the guys who made it have actually done a fantastic job of its design. It doesn’t classify as a minimalist wallet; nor does it fit nicely in your pocket, but what it does do it provide ample functionality in a well-designed and clever wallet. If you’re a total nerd like me then you probably grew up with the PlayStation as your first games console. This wallet provides a lot of nostalgia and is very much a conversation starter when you use it. Let’s take a look at it in a bit more detail.

The only issue I found was the material was quite unpleasant to the touch and is made from a plastic-like textured material that has a solid structure but less than quality feel. That being said, the coloration of the wallet is really great and really gives that PlayStation vibe with that classic grey color and the retro PlayStation logo.

Functionality & Utility

As a Classic bi-fold design the Sony PlayStation wallet has all the functionality you’d come to expect from a large traditional wallet. With multiple card slots, a full-length note slot, and even a zip-up coin pouch, the PlayStation is chock-full of all that you’d expect from a typical bi-fold wallet. The Wallet has 8 card slots in total which provide you with a great capacity for you to 8 – 16 cards.

Another feature not typically seen in modern-day wallets is the button clip that secures the wallet shut and makes up the shape of the logo. When using the wallet it was surprisingly very pleasing and reminded me of the typical zip and velcro wallets I used as a child. I guess this is the compromise you have to make for a wallet of this design.

Daily use has a detrimental effect on this wallet. I used it for around 1 week and found the color darkened and the material began to almost shrivel. This isn’t a good sign for the longevity of this wallet but in all honestly, I didn’t really care. This Sony Playstation Bifold Wallet is more of a collectible for gaming fans and that’s really what it should be.

Final Verdict

As a novelty item, the Playstation wallet is very cheap coming in at just £10.95 (around $15.00). For this price, I’d say it would be a fun item to buy for a kid or if you’re a big fan of Sony and gaming.

All in all the PlayStation wallet is a fun, and functional little wallet. While unfortunately on the larger side the wallet is hindered by its bulk and is anything less than slim or minimal. That being said this wallet was never designed for the minimalist enthusiasm and is rather a fantastic reminder and homage to a great game console that defined my childhood. I love this wallet and would highly recommend it to any collector or PlayStation lover alike. For more information on the Sony Playstation wallet click the link below.
