Ridge Release New Oceanlight Wallet Range
Ridge's latest aluminium wallets capture the interplay of light and water beneath the ocean surface.
You have the sun coming through and piercing the water. More beautiful than anything you can experience on land. These are the words of underwater cinematographer Perrin James in which Ridge’s latest collection of designs, the Oceanlight Collection is based on. Along with his collaboration with Ridge, Perrin is a successful film maker and specialises in documentary filmmaking exploring the ocean and the creatures that inhabit it.
Ridge’s Oceanlight Collection captures three fleeting underwater moments: the descent into Dark Harbor’s depths, the dance of Gold Horizon’s refracted beams, and the electric glow of Green Flash’s shallows. Subaquatic light, translated into aluminium. Also people check out Perrin James’ instagram profile for a look at many photos that are clear inspiration for this range of wallets.

My personal favourite Green Flash captures the luminous quality of shallow tropical waters. The gradual gradient perfectly captures the slow loss of light as you submerge deeper into the depths of the ocean, while its saturated green on top reflects the moment just before you surface, when everything is bathed in that distinctive green flash of filtered sunlight. I really like it, it evokes a calm me in and I think this gradual change in color lends itself perfectly to a wallet like the Ridge.

The final two wallets, the Dark Harbor and Gold Horizon, are similar but different in the ways that matter. The Dark Harbor wallet represents the ocean at significant depth, where sunlight barely reaches and the water takes on that deep, midnight navy tone. This is the colour you encounter below the photic zone, where the wavelengths of light have been absorbed by the water above, lovely but nothing specific in my opinion.

Finally, the Gold Horizon, with its oil-filled engraved golden ripples traversing through the body of the wallet, perfectly captures that spectacular underwater phenomenon where sunlight breaks through the ocean surface in golden shafts. The pattern is almost hypnotic, and the gold waves perfectly complement the deep rich blue of the wallet.
Overall, I really like Ridge’s Oceanlight Collection. I love that although it’s hard to continually innovate in features with a wallet such as the Ridge, they’re continually pushing new creative and innovative designs for us all to enjoy and consider. The Oceanlight Collection starts at $95.00 (the standard price for a basic aluminium Ridge), and includes all models such as Ridge’s MagSafe compatible version.
