RFID-Blocking Wallets Solve a Problem That Doesn't Exist
Wallet brands have spent a decade selling protection from electronic pickpocketing. So I went looking for the victims.
RFID. The term is everywhere, and if I had a dollar for every time I've had the pleasure of reading the acronym, I'd be a very rich man. But if I was to ask you what RFID even was, what would you say? Would you give me the boring technical definition? What it stands for? Or default to the way wallet brands have marketed it for decades: security?
Regardless of what you think RFID is, the simple answer is that in the world of men’s wallets the term is very much planted in the heads of every man when it comes to considering and purchasing a new wallet. A quick bit of research tells me that the term “RFID wallet” is one of the most searched wallet related terms around, getting over 20,000 unique searches per month. Compare that to other terms like “bifold wallet” or “slim wallet”, each of which generates fewer than 5,000 unique monthly searches, and you really begin to understand how important the idea of RFID is to consumers, and perhaps to you reading this article.
What is RFID protection in wallets?
Now let’s get the boring stuff out of the way and answer this seemingly elusive question once and for all. Modern contactless payment cards contain a small Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) chip and antenna that allows you to tap your card on a reader instead of inserting it. Which country you’re reading this from will probably have a big influence on whether you yourself use contactless payment systems. For example in the UK, where I’m from, the vast majority of both people and businesses take and use contactless payments, whether it’s tapping to pay for your morning coffee, or the tap on/tap off system on the London Tube.
RFID-blocking wallets claim to protect against a specific threat: criminals using portable card readers to wirelessly scan and steal your card information while it’s still in your pocket or bag. This potential threat was reported on by many media outlets back when contactless payment systems first became a thing (the video below is potentially what kickstarted it all). The wallets use materials like copper or aluminum to create what is essentially a barrier between the wireless signals, the reader and your cards, blocking the radio waves that RFID chips use to communicate.
The marketing pitch is compelling. Wallet manufacturers warn of thieves in crowded places like airports, trains, or shopping centers who can walk past you with a concealed scanner and harvest your card details without you knowing. They call it “electronic pickpocketing” or “card skimming.” The solution, they say, is a wallet that blocks these radio signals, protecting you from wireless theft.
But does this threat actually exist? Before I even considered writing this article, it was something I had in the back of my mind. If such a threat was so prevalent, why on earth have I never heard anyone actually talk about it? I first asked friends and family. Had they ever been subject to a crime involving card skimming, or did they know anyone who had? Absolutely nothing. Nada. I took to the forums online and asked the same questions, and again, absolutely nothing. It was time to dig into the data and take an objective look at RFID and contactless payments, and answer this once and for all.
The crime that never happens
Okay, so I’ve been through a lot of articles and a lot of data from banking companies, and the answer is clear. There are no verified cases of criminals using RFID skimmers to steal payment card data from cards still in victims’ possession.
Despite billions spent annually combating card fraud, not a single documented incident of the “wireless pickpocketing” scenario has been recorded by any law enforcement agency, consumer protection bureau, or identity theft organization. The $300 million RFID-blocking wallet industry addresses a threat that exists only in marketing materials and proof-of-concept demonstrations, not in the real world, and that’s backed by not just data but industry experts.
Zero documented crimes despite billions in other card fraud
The biggest and most shocking aspect for me when researching this article was just how consistent every authoritative source was on the matter of contactless card related crimes. The FBI’s skimming page discusses only physical devices illegally installed on ATMs, point-of-sale terminals, and fuel pumps, with no mention of RFID or contactless theft, and that’s from the FBI. I thought maybe they have a separate page for this, but nope, it’s not even on the FBI’s radar. To go along with this, the FTC’s Consumer Sentinel Network, which processed 6.5 million fraud reports totaling $12.5 billion in 2024, maintains no category for RFID skimming because no such crimes have been reported.
What about industry experts? The Identity Theft Resource Center (ITRC), the nation’s leading nonprofit tracking identity theft, has been explicit. CEO Eva Velasquez states: “There is just no data to suggest that the theoretical risk is a real-world problem.” COO James E. Lee adds: “We do not believe this topic addresses a real risk. Chip-enabled payment cards and digital wallets are the most secure forms of payment except for cash.” A 2010 television investigation found the ITRC had “never seen a case of RFID skimming used to steal information”, and that remains true today.
And the most compelling data I stumbled across comes from my home country of the UK. Remember I said that, as a nation, we’re big users of contactless payments? Well, 74% of all card transactions in the UK are contactless, the highest rate globally. UK Finance confirms under its “Common misconceptions about contactless card payments and fraud” section: “There has never been any verified report of this ever happening in the UK. It’s not possible to simply ‘steal’ cash from a contactless card. All money must go through the card system.”
Security experts are all in agreement
The expert consensus is unusually unified. Roger Grimes, security evangelist at KnowBe4 with nearly 25 years of experience, states bluntly: “It’s pretty much a scam. There has never been a single reported RFID crime that would have been blocked by one of these products. All these vendors make money by scaring people about these nonexistent threats.”
Frank McKenna, Chief Strategist at fraud detection firm Point Predictive, concurs: “It’s just very theoretical fraud. Don’t waste your money.” Darius Kingsley, Head of Consumer Banking at Chase, the nation’s largest card issuer, says: “I personally don’t worry about this. I think more of a risk than anything else is people being careless with their card numbers.” Finally, there’s Beni Eliyahu, a security researcher quoted by Consumer Reports, who said: “Basically, you have to be under near-perfect conditions at close range to be able to virtually pickpocket someone. In reality, there have been no documented cases of RFID-based credit card fraud.”
Even Visa’s official position acknowledges: “Fraud from skimming is very unlikely and limited in scope.” The company reports that EMV chip and contactless tokenized transactions have reduced point-of-sale fraud by nearly 90%. There’s really not much else to say. I have been researching this article for a while at this point and there’s literally no evidence in favor of RFID aside from a select few companies who have a vested interest in keeping this lie afloat (I won’t mention names, but they know who they are).
So there you have it… RFID is pointless
No, it’s more than pointless. I feel like at this point we are entering into scam territory. Now let me be really clear here. RFID is something that should not in any shape or form influence the type or brand of wallet you buy. I don’t necessarily blame the vast majority of wallet companies for catering to RFID. To be honest, the vast majority of these brands probably don’t know themselves that this crime doesn’t exist.
Brands need to cater to what consumers are asking for, and as I mentioned earlier when referencing the search volume for “RFID wallets”, it’s very clear the general populace has been misled enough that most men view RFID as a must-have feature. Brands must stay competitive and add these features, as it could be the make or break decision in whether a consumer does or doesn’t choose their wallet. It ends up becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy.
The evidence is overwhelming: RFID-blocking wallets address a threat that has never materialized in documented criminal activity. Not a single law enforcement agency, consumer protection bureau, or identity theft organization has recorded a verified case of criminals using RFID skimmers to steal card data from victims’ pockets or bags while the cards remained in their possession.
I think Dr. Gene Lloyd of the Lloyd Research Institute said it best: “Any technology is susceptible to attack, but the current version of RFID now includes encryption, and anytime we include encryption into the equation, we increase the level of protection exponentially. This makes the fancy wallets unneeded.” So when searching for your next wallet, just ignore RFID entirely and go with the wallet you really want. RFID should not and should never come into the equation, and I’m happy to say that as a verifiable fact.
