A brief detour before we get into the wallets. Around 2022 I launched a sister site to this one called Just My Glasses, which did exactly what the name suggests: reviewed eyewear and tracked what celebrities were wearing. It had its time. In that period I became something of an eyewear enthusiast, which is how I ended up with a deep appreciation for Jacques Marie Mage, a brand I have written extensively about and consider one of the finest independent eyewear labels in existence.

So you can imagine my reaction when a Jacques Marie Mage leather wallet appeared in front of me.

Who Is Jacques Marie Mage?

Jacques Marie Mage is a Los Angeles-designed, Japanese-made independent luxury eyewear brand founded by Jérôme Mage in 2015. Mage is French-born and came to eyewear not through the traditional fashion industry pipeline, but through a deep personal obsession with objects, their history, their materials, and their meaning. Every model is produced in limited runs of between 400 and 800 pieces per colorway, named after a cultural icon, and retails between $600 and $1,500.

The brand operates as much like a rare sneaker drop as a traditional eyewear company, and the collector market responds accordingly. Discontinued colorways resell above retail. Waiting lists on new releases stretch months. Kendall Roy wore them in Succession. Brad Pitt wore them on the cover of British GQ. They are, by any measure, one of the most culturally significant eyewear brands of the past decade.

In their first foray beyond eyewear, Jacques Marie Mage introduced limited-edition leather goods handcrafted in Italy: subtle, historically-inspired pieces that reflect the respect they hold for centuries-old traditions of leathercraft. Wallets are now part of that.

The Wallets

Three wallets are currently available in the range: the Theodore Cardholder, the Cassandre Bifold, and the Elston Trifold. Each is available in five finishes: natural calfskin in orange and dark brown, eel skin, a monogrammed calfskin version, and ostrich leather. Prices start at $420 and climb to $1,250 for the ostrich leather Elston.

The construction is consistent with what you would expect from a brand that takes over 300 steps and more than 100 artisans to produce a single pair of glasses. The wallets feature custom lambskin linings, hand-painted edges, hairline Art Deco details, a debossed JMM insignia, and signature arrowhead adornments in 24-karat gold-plated brass.

Every piece comes in a distinct monograph box set in the brand’s Bordeaux Empire colorway, accompanied by a fine cotton dust bag and a letterpress authenticity card bearing a handwritten limited-edition number and the designer’s signature.

This is not a brand dipping a toe into leather goods for the sake of it. The level of detail here is consistent with the philosophy that has driven the eyewear from day one: slow, deliberate, considered making for people who actually care about the object.

Worth the Price?

Starting at $420 these are not wallets for most people, and JMM would be the first to tell you that. They are limited-edition collectibles that happen to function as wallets, in the same way that a JMM frame happens to sit on your face. The materials, the craftsmanship, and the brand’s track record all suggest the quality is genuinely there. Whether you value what that quality represents at the price being asked is entirely personal.

What I can say is that this is one of the more genuinely exciting crossovers I have come across in a while, and one that makes perfect sense when you understand what Jacques Marie Mage actually is. For anyone already in the JMM universe, a wallet to match the frames is an obvious next step. For anyone discovering the brand through this article, welcome to a rabbit hole.
