Thread Wallets was founded in 2014 in Provo, Utah by husband-and-wife team Colby and McKenzie Bauer. The idea was born when Colby lost his wallet to the ocean while surfing in Hawaii and replaced it with a broccoli rubber band wrapped around his cards. Realising the minimalist wallet category was full of bulky, boring products with no personality, Colby set out to combine slim functionality with patterned, expressive elastic. The first prototypes were sewn together in McKenzie's childhood bedroom on a sewing machine her mother had gifted her at age 12. The brand launched on Kickstarter in 2014, raising around $35,000 across two campaigns, and grew from a $140K business to over $4M in revenue within three years. Today Thread offers a wide range of carry essentials including wallets, phone cases, bags, slings, and lanyards, sold direct, on Amazon, in retail, and through corporate gifting.
