Open Sea Leather, formerly known as Das Offene Meer Leather, was founded in 2015 by Michael Bluth, an active duty US Navy foreign language analyst. The brand was born out of need to create, with Bluth turning to leathercraft as a refuge from the intense Mandarin Chinese coursework of his Navy training. What started as gifts for friends and family quickly turned into a full business, and today Open Sea Leather operates out of Honolulu, Hawaii, with every wallet still designed by Bluth and made by Hawaiian artisans. The brand draws inspiration from family history and the open sea, and is known for distinctive sewing patterns, full-grain Botero leather from the Conceria Walpier tannery in Italy, and extensive customisation including 19 leather colours and matching thread options.
